Week 6
Jon invited a bunch of us to go with him and I reached out to Kerstin since I haven't seen her in a while. We walked around and looked at some of the ceramics before going up and meeting Jon and Reina. It was another sort of mingle then lecture event, but it was pretty fun. I can't tell if it was fun because I got to reconnect with friends, or if it was fun because the event was fun. I think it might be a friends thing - you could kinda tell the event was run by alumni and not the actual institution ahah. REALLY nice venue though - I haven't been to the Gardiner Museum since I was a kid, and it was gorgeous for the event!

Experience:
- Went with Jon, Reina and Kerstin
- Drink tickets and food!! Amazing venue (Gardiner Museum) + FREE
- Had fun with friends & met some other grad students who were in nutrition
- Mix/mingle for a while, then had the lecture portion
- The lecture was less engaging but had lots of information – focused on psychiatry
- A little less formal and a bit disorganized (run by the alumni association rather than the university and it was visible)
- 2nd half was where mental health non-profits/organizations gave a 5 minute shpiel about their organization
- Then we went to a bar after
What I learned:
- Competency based education is changing the way training is run
- Canada is behind in mental health in comparison to other countries
- Use of big data to lever information new already have
- Changes: access (need to work together and integrate), quality (evidence based intervention), technology (ways to connect to patients), stigma (not seen as medical; even stigma towards the professionals who work with mental health patients)
